Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) Nutrition Support and Medication Therapy

Objectives:
- Define EDS along with other common syndromes that patients may have, specifically, mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) and postural orthostatic tachycardic syndrome (POTS).
- Discuss various gastrointestinal tract disorders that patients with EDS may experience.
- Explain how medication therapy and allergies to the medications may affect the patient’s treatment.
- Describe how enteral nutrition failure leads to parenteral nutrition.

Presentation 1: Nutrition Assessment and Management of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)
Objectives:
- Identify areas to highlight during the nutrition assessment of patients with EDS.
- Explain why parenteral and enteral nutrition are ideally avoided in patients with EDS.
- Describe strategies to avoid parenteral and enteral nutrition in patients with EDS, and how to decide when it’s necessary.
Presentation 2: Lifestyle Modifications and Multimodal Approach to EDS: A Patient’s Perspective
- Summarize the patient experience of living with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, including the impact of medical gaslighting.
- Identify common clinical behaviors and biases that contribute to gaslighting in patients with complex conditions.
- Integrate patient-centered strategies to improve recognition and management of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.
